The Golden Retriever originally came from Scotland. The breed was developed by a Scottish elite named Sir Dudley Majoribanks, also called Lord Tweedmouth. He was quite enthusiastic in hunting waterfowls.

He wanted a dog that can retrieve the game from both land and water—a dog that’s generally eager in hunting and retrieving. Moreover, good-natured and loyal when at home. The breeding program began around 1830.

The first set he bred was a retriever that had yellow coat named Nous and a female Water Spaniel named Belle. The litter that was produced from the cross was then bred to other retriever, setters, and spaniels, and might have included the St. John’s water dog, and a Bloodhound with sandy hair. Lord Tweedmouth mostly used the yellow puppies for breeding.

In 1920, the breed was officially named Golden Retriever by the Kennel Club in England. In 1932, the American Kennel Club gave recognition to the breed.

A Golden Retriever is best identified through its golden coat, of course. The coat should be among the various shades of gold, otherwise, the retriever is considered a failure in AKC breed standards according to the kennel clubs in America and Britain. The breed has a double coat. The topcoat is water-resistant and it’s longer and harsher than the undercoat, which is soft and fuzzy.

The Golden Retriever has an athletic and muscular body, with dark colored nose—black or brownish black. It has a kind and intelligent expression, and an aura of self-confidence and eagerness.

The Golden Retriever is an ideal breed to many families as they are friendly, eager to please, lively, calm, and loyal. It’s no wonder that it’s the third most popular breed in America, and among the top ten in other countries.

Being silly and playful, even when they’re a bit older, Golden Retrievers are good companions to kids. They also get along well with other animals.

Goldens are a naturally active breed, and owners must always make it a point to let them exercise for about 40 minutes to an hour daily. They naturally love to swim and would be very happy when given the opportunity.

Although generally sweet and gentle, they tend to be mouthy and might chew on any object. They are retrievers after all and are simply acting out what they are bred to do. This tendency might annoy some owners; that’s why they need to be trained starting at an early age.

Golden Retrievers shed all year round, and are considered by many as heavy shedders. They shed more than the usual during spring and fall when they shed off the old coat to prepare for the cold winter or warm summer. The amount of shedding is affected by temperature and environment.

Owners must groom their Goldens regularly. This means brushing them daily or at least once a week to limit the amount of shedding. An undercoat rake would help. If owners are bothered by the amount of shedding, they should set a regular schedule to vacuum their homes, consider reupholstering furniture, or change carpets to shades similar to gold, or simply avoid wearing dark colored clothes.

What is the best food for a Golden Retriever?

It’s hard to say what the best food for Golden Retrievers is. Each dog has specific needs that might not be the same for other dogs of the same breed. Some dog food may seem good to one dog, while another might get allergies from it. So to be on the safe side, owners must talk to a vet first.

Golden Retrievers, or dogs in general, can eat both animal or plant-based food. But they thrive better with food of animal origin for protein and fats, among others. That’s why owners need to be cautious about giving their pets dry dog food. Kibbles mostly contain fillers, which are made from wheat and other stuff that dogs don’t need nutritionally but can make them full.

Ready-made food is alright for Golden Retrievers, granting that they’re of good quality. To ensure that Goldens are getting proper nutrition, owners might want to include homemade food in their pet’s diet.
