What is a Basset Hound?

A Basset Hound can be your short-legged, lop-eared best friend. This mid-sized fur ball has amazing scent trailing skills known to be good for hunting games. Although Basset Hounds have a dignified and sad look, they can be quite clownish and are known to be pleasant around kids.

Where do Basset Hounds come from?

Bassets are likely to have come from France, like its ancestor, the St. Hubert Hound or the Bloodhound. They have a very sharp sense of smell although this ability is second only to Bloodhounds. Still, Bassets have gained quite a reputation in tracking and hunting.

Bassets were popular among the French upper class but after the French Revolution, they became sought-after by commoners as well. The breed’s short legged stature made them easier to follow by less privileged hunters who had no access to horses.

It was around the 1870s when Bassets came to England. It is in England the modern, heavier set Bassets became more popular.

The breed Basset Artésien Normand looks a lot like Basset Hounds only they are relatively lighter.

What does a Basset Hound look like?

Basset Hounds are known for their unique structure. They look like they have the head of a Bloodhound, the height of a Dachshund (bassets are three to four inches taller), and the coat of a Foxhound.

Bassets are short but they are quite sturdy, being heavy-boned. They have a long, droopy ears, a hanging skin, and a long dewlap. The breed has a dolichocephalic skull, which means they have longer skulls than other breeds. They may be short but they have long bodies, which means Bassets can pretty much reach stuff on top of tables.

Their coats smooth, short, and tough-textured mostly come in black, white and tan, in a tri-color or bi-color pattern.

What are Basset Hounds Like?

Generally, Bassets are mild-mannered and easygoing dogs. They’re sociable and they get along with adults, children, other pets, and even other animals. They can be funny and are known to cheer up people in dog shows.

Historically, they hunt in packs and this trait has been passed to modern-day Bassets. They are happier when they are with other dogs. If they pick up an interesting scent, like Bloodhounds, they can be fixated in trailing after it. It would be challenging to get their attention once this happens.

Bassets also have the tendency to bay and howl more often than other breeds.

Are Basset Hounds easy to train?

It may take awhile to train Bassets. Like Bloodhounds, they’re independent and can be stubborn. If their attention is fixed, it will be a challenge to persuade them to do something. Consistent and positive training methods can help. They also respond well to food rewards. Because they’re independent thinkers, with the tendency to be sensitive, they might shut off and be unresponsive to rough training techniques.

How long do Basset Hounds live?

Bassets have a lifespan between 10 to 12 years. Among the breed’s leading causes of death are cancer, old age, gastric dilatation volvulus or twisted stomach, and cardiac complications. They may also develop hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and von Willebrand‘s disease.

If you’re planning to choose Bassets as pets or any other breed for that matter, make sure you get them from good breeders. This can ensure your pups are well-bred and are, more or less, free from more known genetic diseases.

How much are Basset Hound puppies?

Basset Hound puppies cost between USD $400 to $1,000. Show quality puppies from professional breeders cost much more, at around $1,500.

Because Basset Hounds are prone to having health issues, these dogs are considered among the most expensive to keep.

Why are Basset Hounds good pets?

Bassets have the potential to be excellent pets. Why? Basing it on their general disposition, they’re awesome. They’re good-natured and comical, moreover, great around kids. These are the traits many dog owners want from household pets.
