Appenzeller Sennenhunde: The Versatile Working Dog

An Appenzeller Sennenhunde descended from cattle dogs left by the Romans. This pooch was recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale as Appenzeller Sennenhunde with the English translation of Appenzell Cattle Dog. Although it’s a medium-sized breed, due to its high energy level, it’s not recommended to live in an apartment. They are primarily a cattle herding dog but also used as a draft dog and general farm dog. This breed is also known as the Appenzeller Mountain Dog. Among the four Swiss mountain dogs, this one is the rarest.

Appenzeller Sennenhundes have a white blaze on their face. This breed is normally tri-colored. They have small triangular ears and have a thick topcoat with a black or brown color. Their undercoat can be a thick gray, black, or brown color.

At the shoulder, male Appenzeller Sennenhundes stand about 20 to 22 inches tall while females can be around 19.5 to 21 inches in height. They may weigh anywhere from 48 to 55 lbs.

This dog needs a lot of exercises both physical and mental to keep it happy. They are great herders, high-spirited, and are suspicious of strangers. Their high maintenance requirements kept them from being a popular breed in the United States.

This pooch is quite lively and would love to do tasks to keep it busy. You can engage this breed in some obedience activities as well as some social skills. They love children, especially if these dogs are raised in a kind and loving way.

They generally have an easy-to-care coating as it does not require regular brushing. However, they shed heavily seasonally. During their shedding season, you will have to do some constant brushing to eliminate loose hair. It would also need regular baths and brushing of teeth.

The Appenzeller Sennenhunde is quite healthy, having little to no hereditary problems which are rare for medium-sized breeds. The most common health issue for this breed is hip dysplasia.

  • They can develop unwanted behaviors if they are not given enough amount of exercise and turn neurotic and moody.
  • As puppies, they are intelligent enough to learn fast which should be taken advantage of in teaching them what should be and should not be done.
  • If they were not given consistent leadership they might end up being stubborn.
  • While they are great with kids, Appenzeller Sennenhundes have the tendency to nip children’s heels due to their herding instincts.

The Appenzeller Sennenhunde is a rare breed that needs much attention in order to prevent it from showing its destructive or negative nature. It is not a fitting breed to have in the city as it is more used to living in rural and suburban areas.
