The first account of the Airedale Terrier happened in the latter half of the 19th century. The Yorkshire men decided to cross small terriers with Otterhounds. This larger breed of terriers has a stronger sense of smell and a skill in water drills in the river valleys.

Known as a relatively modern breed, he was recognized both in British and German armies during World War I because of his intelligence and unwavering loyalty.

Airedales served as messengers delivering important posts and notices without hesitation despite the injuries he had at war.

Also, he helped in saving the soldiers’ lives by constantly looking for them in the combat zone.

A female Airedale weighs 18-20 kilograms (40-45 pounds) and stands 22-23 inches (56-58 centimeters)

How to Groom an Airedale Terrier?

An Airedale Terrier has short-haired double coats: a rough and wiry outer coat and a soft and gentle undercoat. His coat can be black, white, tan or shades in between.

They need good grooming like other dog breeds. Their hair should be plucked twice annually and trimming of unwanted hair between the pads of their feet should be done if necessary.

Stripping the coat can also result to shedding off of little to no hair in the long run. If you prefer not stripping their coat, even if you do regular trimming and brushing, shedding or hair and fur piles will still be visible.

An Airedale’s beard should also be washed daily because of the food residue that might stick to it.
